Very last minute, I managed to make and send a few of these cute birds in lieu of Christmas cards which hopefully arrived just in time!

(I'm kind of obsessed with @sakuraofamerica gelly roll pens. I must have tried all brands of white pen and these ones are absolutely the nicest to work with and really pop on red or brown card.)

I'm also sharing some cute photos from earlier this month when my lovely studio mate @jilltytherleigh and I ran a super-fun community workshop at the @space_studios_london gallery space in east London. We worked with all ages of to create these birds as decorations and garlands and we met the nicest bunch of people. Thank to everyone who came and for making it such a joyful and peaceful day. 💛💛💛

Here’s a few cute pages from one of my sketchbooks.

I never really plan out what I am going to draw in advance… I generally just grab a few colours and see what happens.

I think it’s important to see sketchbooks as a fun (and safe) place to doodle, draw and experiment. Its *meant* to be the place where things go wrong. Lots of pages in the sketchbook are pretty rubbish. 😁

I use cheap student range sketchbooks with medium-thickness cartridge paper. In London I get mine from @cowlingandwilcox and @cassart1984 💛

Awards are weird.

When I was first starting out as an illustrator, I spent a lot of time and a lot of money entering contents and annuals in the hopes that it would bring that elusive big break.

Sometimes I did win something but mostly not, and I can’t honestly say that the rewards of winning made up for all the times that I felt awful when I got rejected.

These days I mostly save my money and focus on making work that is as good as it can be, and work that I like.

Anyway - on that note - here’s a cute two-frame animated gif that I made from a quick drawing in my sketchbook.

And don’t stress too much about those contests! 💛

So, you may or may not have noticed that I’ve been pretty quiet on here lately. Like many, I’ve felt a bit exasperated by all the algorithmic changes, but that’s not the whole story. I’m a very private person and don’t often share much about my personal life, but I have been reflecting on this a lot.

Last year, I found a very small lump and was diagnosed with breast cancer. As you can imagine, as a freelancer (and as a human), this was less than ideal news. That being said, I’m incredibly grateful to have been diagnosed at an early stage and successfully treated by the NHS here in London.

1 in 7 women in the UK will develop breast cancer, and as the cliché goes, you never think it’ll happen to you—I certainly didn’t. I found the lump myself during a self-exam, and I want to stress how important these checks are for all women*, especially those of us who are too young for regular mammogram programs. In the UK, that means women under 50, like me.

I highly recommend checking out the self-exam videos created by @oriordanliz and putting a reminder in your diary or phone to check for lumps or any changes that are unusual for you. Had I not randomly come across Dr Liz's video in my feed and changed my approach, I’m sure I wouldn’t have found the tiny hard lump hidden deep within my chest and had it checked by my GP. 💛

*While breast cancer is most common in women, it can also affect men and people of all genders, so self-awareness is vital for everyone.
