Purchase of the Week #3
This weeks purchase was more of a bulk shop. The great thing about childrens books is that kids outgrow them and careless parents dispose of them to charity. These books were found in a local charity shop today for between 25 and 50p!

This purchase included the original verson Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever which was recently discussed on Drawn!, a 70s version of Judith Kerr's (the woman behind Mog) The Tiger who came to tea and a 60s copy of Robert Lopshire's Put Me the Zoo.
I also very much like the lovely 60s lithographed book called Sunday (more photos on flickr and a great little book about kittens with wonderful/terrifying illustrations by Racey Helps.
It doesn't get any better than boxing kittens! |
Purchase of the Week #2
Following the posting of my kitsch postcards last week, I starting a regular(ish) series of posts & flickr set of my thrifty secondhand purchases.
This week's purchase is from a local junk shop and cost all of 50p. I quite like looking at old technical drawings and this little book is full of them. As you can imagine, its not exactly a page-turner but I was really sold on the old battered blue/yellow dustjacket and the slightly wonky embossing on the hardback cover.
Title: "FORD CARS, Anglia, Prefect, Popular 8 and 10", 1961, Third Edition, Publishers: C Arthur Pearson, London
The icing on the cake was finding this 2 colour leaflet inside for car insurance:

After literally minutes of searching the Internet, I was disappointed to find that "Gt. Britain's oldest established motor insurance specialist" is no more and its its old premises on Sheen Road, SW14 is now Pinpoint Haberdashers...

I really like the simple illustrations inside, and the choice of icons for each profession. While teachers are represented by a mortar board and cane, bankers by money, civil servants get a nice big pot of tea! |
Mid Week News
I have been very busy of late so have been a bit slack with Illustration Friday or updates.
Current illustration work I've been doing more work for Girl Guiding and the BBC and have just done some new work both for Supernanny Magazine and Haymarket Publishing. I also have illustrations in the current issues of Girl Talk Magazine and Mac Format
Orange My spaceman image is now being used on Orange's 3G sim card packaging. I've seen the credit card design and it looks very nifty!
Zeroin Interview You can read my mini interview over at Zeroin. If you can't find it, click on the "Inspiration" link. |
Purchase of the Week #1
Kitsch purchase of the week! I couldn't resist this pile of 50s postcards from Italy which I found in a local charity shop. Very camp indeed!
